Why this comparison comes up now

The Zebra TC52 has reached the end of its sales life — Zebra records a last-sale date of 31 October 2024, with service and support running to 31 December 2028, and points to the TC53 as the replacement. That puts a deadline on every TC52 fleet still in service: the hardware keeps working, but new units are no longer available and support has an end date.

So the practical question for most teams is not "DT50S or TC52" — it is what to standardise on for the refresh. The choice is between Zebra's own successor and an alternative platform. Where the DT50S is ahead

• Screen size — 5.7" versus 5.0". Material in retail, clienteling and any workflow with a dense line-item list.
• Storage — 64 GB as standard versus 32 GB, which matters as Android and enterprise agents grow.
• Wi-Fi 6 as standard. The base TC52 and TC52x are Wi-Fi 5; only the later TC52ax revision reaches Wi-Fi 6.
• Android 13 with GMS out of the box, one platform version across the range rather than a version that varies by ship date.
• Bluetooth 5.1 versus 5.0.

Where the Zebra TC52 is ahead

Being straight about this is more useful to you than a one-sided table.

• Sealing — IP68 and IP65 versus IP67 on the DT50S. If the device is washed down or routinely submerged, that difference is real.
• Drop and tumble — Zebra publishes multiple 1.8 m drops to concrete with the rugged boot, plus 500 tumbles at 0.5 m.
• Accessory ecosystem. The TC range has a decade of Zebra and third-party cradles, cases, holsters and vehicle mounts behind it. The Urovo accessory range is smaller and OEM-led.
• OS patching track record. Zebra LifeGuard has taken the TC52 as far as Android 14, and that documented cadence is part of some customers' compliance posture.
• MDM coverage. Most major MDM platforms ship day-one Zebra device profiles; Urovo is supported but less prominent.

If you are refreshing a TC52 fleet

Two things are worth knowing before you plan the swap. Accessory cradles are not cross-compatible between the two platforms, so budget a full bill of materials rather than assuming existing charging infrastructure carries over. And if your scanning logic is built on Zebra DataWedge, plan a short technical session to port it — most intent-based workflows move across directly, but it is work worth scoping rather than discovering.

Which one to choose

If you are standardising for a new deployment or a TC52 refresh and the environment is retail, hospitality, light warehouse or field service, the DT50S covers the specification at a lower unit cost with a current Android platform. If the device faces wash-down or submersion, or the customer is contractually locked to Zebra LifeGuard patching and an established Zebra accessory estate, stay on the Zebra line — and in that case the TC53 is the successor to look at, not the TC52.
