Start with the cheapest thing that works
A barcode scanner in HID keyboard mode types the barcode into whichever field has focus. That includes the stock and order screens you already use in Sage, with no integration, no driver and no per-device licence. For a stockroom, a receiving bench or a despatch desk, that alone removes most of the typing and most of the typing errors. It is worth exhausting this option before considering anything larger.

Where Sage stops, and what that costs
The limit is real and worth understanding early. Sage records stock; it does not direct a warehouse. There is no bin-level put-away logic, no picking route, and no offline working on a device out in the racking. Sites that need those things run a third-party stock or warehouse application alongside Sage, and it is that application — not Sage — that then decides the hardware.

In practice the thing stopping a Sage site from scanning is rarely the scanner. It is that a good share of the stock has no barcode on it, or carries a supplier barcode that means nothing in Sage. Getting a label printer and a sensible labelling routine in place is what makes the rest work, and it is a smaller purchase than most people expect.

Not on its own. Sage records what stock you hold; directing where it goes and how it is picked is what a third-party stock or warehouse application adds. That is a software decision to settle before hardware, because the application then determines which devices are supported.

For product, location and despatch labels a 4-inch desktop thermal printer such as the Bixolon XD5-40 covers most requirements. Choose direct thermal for short-life labels and thermal transfer where the label needs to survive handling, cold or time. If you are printing continuously rather than in batches, it is worth stepping up.
